SILVER MILE MEANS PILES OF CASH
26 March 2008

When you turn off the Tadmarton Road to head towards Sibford School, your destination is exactly 1 mile away. Cover that distance with five pence pieces and you'll need a staggering 90,000 coins or £4,500...which is precisely the amount that former pupils and friends of the school have collected. It was back in 2001, at a reunion of the Sibford Old Scholars Association, that it was decided to attempt to create a silver mile of 5p coins in support of the school's development fund. Explained organiser Ann Bond: "We wanted to do something to which all our members could contribute, and a silver mile seemed fun and an unusual challenge. In the first three months we raised £1,300 and since then the appeal has been moving slowly but surely towards its target." That goal has now been reached and Ann and her husband Ray returned to Sibford to hand over the cash. Said head Michael Goodwin: "This has been a terrific effort and I'm grateful for, and impressed by, the tenacity of all those who have amassed this considerable sum. The school has exciting plans for the future which include building a brand new hall, which will be used for our regular meetings for worship and for theatrical productions. We are also creating new sports changing facilities and a new staff room, so donations such as this are extremely welcome."
